Anchor - Breakaway Devotionals 2026 - Friday
Jerry and I love to go to the beach. Even if he can’t get down to the water’s edge, seeing and hearing the waves roll and crash puts him in one of his two happy places (you’ll have to ask him if you want to know what the other is). I enjoy jumping the waves, even though it makes me tired.
Experiencing the ocean is refreshing and restorative; feeling tossed about in life is exhausting—in every way. It can make us feel like we can’t get firm footing. As much as we’d like to change the circumstances, sometimes we can’t. So, what is the remedy?
Set an anchor.
Anchors keep boats from drifting. They do this by digging into the sandy bottom, essentially burrowing in to hold securely.
We’ve talked about biblical water stories this week. There’s no water in today’s passage, Hebrews 6:18-20. Instead, we’re assured we have an anchor for our soul. I don’t know about you, but that is welcome news for me. Some days I feel like I have spiritual ADHD. What a joy to know my soul is anchored.
The verse defines our firm and secure soul anchor as “this hope.” What hope is the writer talking about?
He is addressing Jewish followers of Jesus. It makes sense then that he is referencing the promises God makes in his Word, knowing that God’s promises were faithfully fulfilled and shown in the life of Abraham.
And now, so many centuries later, we can still cling to the hope of the promises in God’s Word. We have even more examples from history of the way God keeps his promises. These truths are the anchor that can keep our souls from drifting when difficulties arise.
Are you dealing with spiritual drift? If so, check that you are using the correct anchor (God’s truth) and that you are firmly secured.
Did you know that all anchors are not the same? They vary in size and design based on the needs of each vessel and the type of water they’ll be in.
What a comfort to know that God, who knit each of us together in our mother’s womb Psalm 139:13 knows and offers the exact anchor to fit our need.
